Beauty Chef- Sleep

You know those days where you’re just thinking way too much or just simply have too much going on in your life? Your body feels exhausted, but your brain is on hyper-mode. I find that when I’m way too busy/stressed and am not taking any ‘me’ time to relax or meditate, I will have trouble trying to sleep- as I’m sure you can relate to yourself. Once you forego taking time for yourself, even if it’s five minutes a day, you step into dangerous territory. Also compounded with the fact that I grind my jaw when I do nap or sleep- a habit started from a very stressful period in my life- it’s not a pleasant situation to even be asleep in the first place. I mean who doesn’t love to sleep?! In our modern lifestyles, it’s the only time we can give our bodies and minds a break, so it would be great to get the extra help we need when we just can’t fall asleep- for whatever reason it is. After two weeks of having trouble sleeping and being in a super bad mood, compounded with my jaw pain increasing as well, I finally spent some time looking at natural sleep aids. When you know an older relative who completely relies on their prescription sleeping drugs, you definitely become resistant in even going for a natural alternative in the first place.

Although I read many good reviews about the “Sleep” product ($60) of Beauty Chef, I did take a while in purchasing it because it was quite pricey for 20 servings. I had tried the “Glow” product before from this line, and although I did enjoy it, it was too expensive for me to continue to repurchase and use in order to note a difference. Thus, I did not look into other products from the line. After once again being fed up with not being able to sleep, however, when I saw that Integrity Botanicals started to carry it, I finally decided to try it out (also thanks to my reward points at Integrity Botanicals 😉 ). Also, I considered that this is not something I would need to take every day to see a difference- it would be taken on a need-only basis.

The ingredients, first off, are superb:

Organic turmeric, organic cinnamon, Bio Fermented Blend (turmeric, paw paw), sour cherry fruit extract, lemon balm herb extract, organic ginger, black pepper, organic cardamom, passionflower herb top flowering extract, organic clove flower bud, saccharomyces cerevisiae (boulardii), organic nutmeg, clove flower bud extract, lactobacillus acidophilus, lactobacillus plantarum.

FullSizeRender 7I was trying so hard to find something suspicious that would make me think “Nope!,” but I couldn’t! Just because something is “natural,” it certainly does not mean it has been thoroughly researched and is “healthy,” so I was being weary of this. After seeing the ingredients list, however, and realizing I actually use some of these spices already, I felt comfortable about trying it out. Not to mention that it “contains bio-fermented turmeric and pawpaw plus 1.5 billion probiotics per serving,” as quoted directly from their site. The probiotics are a definite plus in my book!

The first night, I scooped out one teaspoon exactly one hour before I slept, as directed, and mixed in it warm water. I immediately paused after one sip. All I can say is… is STRONG. There is a definite reason others mix it with warm nut milk and honey. HOWEVER, since I’m simply too lazy to do that, I still drink it in plain water hah! 😉 It’s only 5 seconds of a bitter, awful taste, so I figure I can take it. (I also think drinking Reishi extract every morning makes me tolerate it a bit more since that’s so bitter as well.) But back to that first night- I waited out the hour that Friday night by watching another episode of the new Stranger Things season, and I definitely felt a difference. Mind you, I wake up at 4:30a.m. every weekday to fit in my commute to work, and it was already nearing midnight, but the type of relaxed I felt was substantially different from how I would feel on a normal, exhausted weekday- I slept beautifully that night.

To continue to test the product out on days where I would not be up for so long, I also took it the following 4 days. The effect was the same- I felt very relaxed and fell asleep very easily. Even on a day that I did not wear my night guard for my TMJ, I woke up without any strong headaches or awful pain. I certainly still have the issue, but it was an unexpected effect to note the pain could have been lessened, perhaps from simply being more relaxed. This is a separate issue, however, and I will have to continue to address it, since I really do NOT want botox  injections in my jaw…which is a thing by the way if you didn’t know. What I do know for certain, however, is that the efficacy of this product took  less than a week to attest to in regards to aiding me with my sleep. I am honestly very pleasantly surprised and impressed with this product, and will continue to repurchase it regardless of the steep price.
