Moss Skincare Review

Moss Skincare…where to begin. When I started to use these products, it was love at first use. I never actually heard of moss until Integrity Botanicals introduced her re-vamped line to the line of brands they carry. What intrigued me was discovering that her line was formulated with acne-prone skin in mind. The lineup at the time consisted of Revele, Potenci, and Illumina. Since then, the founder Celestyna Higgins has added Beurre Celeste, and Zen Physic (pre-orders due to ship soon).

consistently use and purchase products of this line, and even when I want to change up my skincare routine, I’ll still be using some of these products. This is what makes this line holy grail material to me- the fact that I am consistently using and enjoying its products, even after a long time of use. It’s hard to find which quality brands to try and stick to when there’s so many emerging in green beauty, but this is one of my top choices. In all, through my months of usage, I’ve definitely noticed that my skin is less congested, less prone to breakouts, hydrated, soft, and radiant. Sounds pretty amazing right? RIGHT!

Right before this point, I was definitely not of the “less is more” mentality. I would PILE on different oils and balms to my face, thinking it would be better. Of course, my skin would get extremely oily and congested as a result. I would also not give one product a chance to demonstrate what it can do for my skin, as I would rotate my products frequently and constantly try new ones. Once I settled down and realized this was actually harming my skin, I would rotate and combine products less frequently and thus better assess their results. Nothing really “wowed” me to the point I would consider them a part of my Holy Grail skincare products, even the expensive, mainstream green beauty products- until I started using moss. I’m sure you can already tell how much a fan I am of Celestyna Higgins, the creator- this woman just can’t do any wrong.

I will either purchase from Integrity Botanicals or moss skincare directly, as Celestyna puts up limited edition products that rotate quite frequently and are delightful. Two of these are a mask and lip balm that I’ve purchased and fell in love with.

But enough! Let’s get into the products. They’re no doubt expensive due to the quality of the formulations but due to how concentrated they are, you only need a little to make a HUGE difference in your skin. They also offer samples if you are unsure of how your skin will react.

Illumina ($54 – $145)

Illumina is one of the superstar products of this line. It contains ingredients such as white willow bark, pumpkin enzymes, plant ceramides, and Vitamin C. This is a great replacement for those conventional products we used to use with retinoids or acids- I’m guilty of this and it has definitely resulted in a wrecked skin barrier. This gentle exfoliating product is a decongesting, Vitamin C serum that is also cited to smooth wrinkles and discoloration.

I use this product every single day after my cycle ends (my skin is very sensitive during), which means I use this 3/4 weeks of the month. We are instructed to apply it after cleansing/toning and before moisturizer/oils. I apply 1-2 pumps first thing after I cleanse, and wait a minute or two before continuing my routine (which is more moss products hah!). At times I also  choose to alternate, using it one night, then foregoing it the next. It’s all about listening to your skin and making the best use of a product. I definitely have noticed smoother, more radiant skin ever since I incorporated this product into my nightly skincare routine- not to mention less breakouts and congestion. I used to have the original formula, and find that I have fallen even more in love with Illumina with the  updated formula which is significantly less sticker.

Ingredients: Viola Odorata (Violet) Leaf Hydrosol*, Water/Aqua, Lactobacillus/Pumpkin Fruit Ferment Filtrate, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vitamin C), Vigna Aconitifolia (Moth Bean) Seed Extract, Salix Alba (White Willow) Bark Extract*, Serenoa Serrulata (Saw Palmetto) CO2 Extract, Glycerin, Glycosphingolipids, Methylpropanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Phenylpropanol, Gluconolactone, Dehydroxanthan Gum, Magnolia Grandiflora (Magnolia) Bark Extract*, Andrographis Paniculata Extract*, Epilobium Parviflorum (Smallflower) Extract*, Arctium Lappa (Burdock) Root Extract*, Olea Europaea (Olive) Leaf Extract*, Monarda Fistulosa (Bee Balm) Oil* (<0.05%), Aniba Rosaedora (Rosewood) Oil*‡ (<0.05%){* = organic}

Potenci ($54 – $145)

The other superstar product of moss! I was obsessed with the idea of exfoliating my skin, and thus Illumina was my first purchase of this line. It wasn’t until I started looking more into it that I realized how important it is to properly hydrate your skin.

Over-exfoliating is something I was definitely guilty of, leading to textured and overly oily skin. That mentality stuck with me even after I ditched the products which contained retinol and harsh acids, which is why I was more attracted to Illumina. As cited from the moss website, this serum is described as their “Strongest Anti-Aging Product. Ideal For Rejuvenation And Repair.” Those last two words were definitely something I needed after the years of harsh products I used that damaged my skin. After purchasing and incorporating into my daily routine, Potenci is now just as valuable to me. Having acne-prone, oily, and dehydrated skin, Illumina + Potenci together have had an amazing impact on my skin.

I mean just take a look at the ingredients: from ceramide complex which help maintain a healthy and protective skin barrier, to N-acetyl glucosamine which helps increase collagen and elastic, to Copaiba Balsam oil which is a powerful anti-infammatory- and these are just the tip of the iceberg- it’s a powerhouse of a product. I have also just started using the updated formula which adds watermelon rind (UV and dehydration protective properties) and Lions Mane Mushroom (healing, reparative, and anti-aging). Keeps getting better and better!

I use this 1-2 pumps of this product religiously every A.M. and P.M. It absorbs so well, my skin immediately sinks it right up- I haven’t found another product that compares to it in terms of this. It’s so light but simultaneously powerful due to the concentrated ingredients in the product, making it one of the best moisturizers for acne prone skin. My skin looks so healthy and luminous after I apply this product- I cannot live without it! Especially if you are looking for something lightweight and very hydrating, but have broken out from Kypris Beauty’s Antioxidant Dew, this is definitely worth a shot.

Ingredients: Helichrysum Arenarium (Helichrysum) Hydrosol*, Aqua/Water, Crambe Abyssinica Seed Oil, Plukenetia Volubilis (Sacha Inchi) Seed Oil*, Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract, Ceramide Complex (Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, Ceramide EOP, Phytosphingosine, Cholesterol, Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate, Carbomer, Xanthan Gum), Astrocaryum Murumuru Seed Butter, Beta Vulgaris (Beet) Sugar Extract, Glycerin*, N-Acetyl Glucosamine, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract*, Methylpropanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Phenylpropanol, Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline, Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Sterols, Palmitoyl Dipeptide-5 Diaminobutyloyl Hydroxythreonine, Palmitoyl Dipeptide-6 Diaminohydroxybutyrate, Dehydroxanthan Gum, Sorbitan Laurate, Polyglyceryl-4 Laurate, Dilauryl Citrate, Citrullus Vulgaris (Watermelon) Fruit Extract*, Hericium Erinaceum (Lion’s Mane Mushroom) Extract*, Ricinus Communis (Castor Bean) Extract*, Copaifera Officinalis (Copaiba Balsam) Oil*, Cymbopogon Martini (Palmarosa) Oil*, Pelargonium Graveolens (Geranium) Oil*, Cananga Odorata (Ylang Ylang Extra) Flower Oil*

Beurre Celeste ($70)

This is a honey-infused cleansing balm. You already know how big on scent I am- its smell has light undertones of caramel to it and is wonderful. One of the reasons I love this cleanser so much is because its phenomenal at cleansing and moisturizing my skin. I used to attribute honey on the skin as a sticky, messy catalyst for more breakouts, but was proven otherwise by this product. It is indeed formulated with honey but it’s not sticky at all, and does not cause me any breakouts.

FullSizeRender-6.jpgI usually use AMBAR’s Micellar Cleansing water or Osmia’s Black Clay Facial Soap in the morning, and this product at night to get all my makeup properly off. I scoop out a small amount, rub it onto dry skin (my preferred method), and massage my face for a few minutes- this method really helps get all the dirt and makeup off my face. The product is able to work best on dry skin, as when you diffuse the product with water, it makes it less effective. It glides on very easily as well, so you really don’t need to wet your skin beforehand. I use a wet wash cloth to remove the product, and walla! It goes on and off so easily. My skin feels soothed, hydrated, and clean. I honestly went into it a little nervous, thinking honey and a rich balm would make me breakout, but pleasantly I found this is not true at all- at least not with this product.

Founder’s note: If your product is granulated,  immerse the bottle in hot water, mix and shake periodically, put in fridge for 1-2 hours, and you’ll be good to go! This will not damage the product and is normal as it could have melted en route.

Ingredients: Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil*, Garcinia Indica (Kokum) Butter*, Neem Flower Honey*, Macadamia Ternifolia (Macadamia Nut) Seed Oil*, Di-PPG-2 Myreth-10 Adipate, Hydroxystearyl Alcohol, Hydroxystearyl Glucoside, Lecithin*°, Xanthan Gum, Citrus Bergamia (Bergamot) Oil†, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Oil*, Aniba Rosaedora (Rosewood) Oil*‡, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract

Revele ($29 – $75)

Revele is an oil-based cleanser once again formulated with acne-prone skin in mind. Here are some of the details as stated by moss: “All the oils used are rich in linoleic acid, which benefits all complexions but especially acneic complexions, since studies have shown that the sebum of acne-prone skin has a tendency to be deficient in linoleic acid, making it more sticky and comedogenic.”

The ingredient profile is much simpler compared to the other products, but as with all other moss products, is effective. It is designed to self-emulsify, meaning you can apply onto dry skin, massage, and cleanse with water without any residue or sticky feel left afterword. When I’m not reaching for the cleansing balm or other cleansers, I’ll use this product. Sometimes I’ll use one or the other of these products as a first or second cleanse depending on the time of day and whether I have makeup that I want to remove. With any choice, I’m never left unsatisfied afterwards. I personally do not use Revele in the mornings, and prefer to use at night to help get my makeup off. Usually for this reason of using it mainly for makeup I’ll use it for my first cleanse. Once again, I recommend to use this on dry skin, and to really take the time to massage it into your skin to help loosen impurities. My skin feels soft and clean whenever I use this method.

Ingredients: Safflower Oil*, Pumpkin Seed Oil*, Perilla Seed Oil*, Di-PPG-2 Myreth-10 Adipate, Green Myrtle Oil*º, Rosemary Oil*º

Aurum ($46- $135)

The final product! And in no way the least. This elixir is described as “A rich blend of acne clearing oils is enhanced with the powerful collagen building amino acid dipalmitoyl hydroyproline (DPHP), which has demonstrated multiple times the level of cellular rejuvenating activity as Vitamin C.” The ingredients Aurum is formulated with are once again very impressive, thoughtful towards acne-prone skin, and effective. One of the ingredients is sacha inchi oil which has “an essential fatty acid content at 48% omega-3 and 36% omega-6 which means it is both very high in linoleic acid (great for balancing oily skin) AND Omega 3s which are powerful skin soothers. Truly unique and exceptional for skin with blemishes.” You can tell Celestyna is so selective and thoughtful with the ingredients she chooses- it has to be the best and most effective.

As with all the products of this line, this is another concentrated formula that you only need a few drops of. I don’t use the product every day, normally once a week. When I do feel I need an extra boost, especially during the week of my cycle, I do tend to use this every day. I will mix 1-2 pumps of this product with AMBAR’s Hydrating Mineral Gelee to help with product absorption, and use it as my final step of my nightly routine. My skin will feel nicely hydrated and plump after usage. Definitely one of my favorite green oil products!

Ingredients: Cucurbita Pepo (Pumpkin) Seed Oil*, Plukenetia Volubilis (Sacha Inchi) Oil*, Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Oil/CO2 Extract*, Perilla Frutescens (Shiso) Seed Oil*, Psidium Guajava (Guava) Seed Oil*, Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) Seed Oil*, Calophyllum Inophyllum (Tamanu) Oil*, Virola Sebifera (Ucuuba) Seed Butter*, Azadirachta Indica (Neem) Seed Oil*, Nigella Sativa (Black Cumin) Seed CO2 Extract*, Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline, Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Sterols, Pearl Powder*, Boswellia Carteri (Frankincense) Oil, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Seed CO2 Extract*, Michelia Champaca (White Champaca) Oil, Monarda Fistulosa (Bee Balm) Extract*, Cananga Odorata (Ylang Ylang Extra) Flower Oil*, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract

Final Words! Some products I would love to see from this line are:

-An eye would be an amazing addition to this line! Something that would address fine lines (crows feet!), puffiness, and bags.

-After trying and falling in love with the the limited edition Velvet Resin mask, I am left hungry for masks from this line. 😀

-A product to address severe scarring. Knowing how well formulated moss is and how educated Celestyna is, a powerful spot treatment to specifically address deep acne scars would be something I trust this brand with and an awesome addition.
