4 Green Beauty Lipstick Brands
For this review, I want to compare my most used lip brands/colors against each other so you can get a better sense of the products and what appeals to you. I am not a fan of lip glosses as they can look too shiny and that is a look I do not prefer on myself, however lipsticks (especially matte) I can never have too much of.
I do want to make a note about staying power- for all the brands mentioned, it’s quite good. However, I eat quite often, drink tea even more often, and drink water even more often. I don’t expect for my lipsticks to not transfer in the midst of all this activity, especially keeping in mind that the ingredients are of natural origin. The red colors do leave more of a stain on my lips throughout the day, and honestly most of these colors leave a slight, pretty stain as well. I do not mind having to reapply them at all, that is what my handy mirror in my bag is for. For being green lipsticks, these perform excellent, and I do not miss my old lipsticks at all.
Kjaer Weis ($36-$56)
I love Kjaer Weis- they are the epitome of green luxury and until this day few green beauty brands can claim the same with their packaging and performance. I was so excited when they came out with lip items, since to me they really cannot do much wrong. However, I do believe there is room for improvement for some of the color formulations. The case itself is quite heavy, but the weight in this case is a positive aspect for me. The appearance is of course very luxurious and stands out among other brands. I love that I can keep reusing them and just purchase refills, as is on par with their usual philosophy (click here for more info). The KW logo engraved onto the lipsticks just adds that extra detail of luxury that pulls the look together and really shows off how well Kjaer Weis understands aesthetic.
Here are the colors swatched out:
If you focus on the light pink color, Honor, you can immediately tell it’s falling apart in the tube. I have thus far purchased the color twice because I love it so much and the same thing has happened- the lipstick will break, even though I lift it little by little. In addition, the formula itself is a disappointment because the lipstick will soon after purchase become mushy/gritty/pasty, worsening over time. The color Believe has a similar outcome. I’m not sure if this is due to keeping the lipsticks in my purse all the time and thus it could be an issue with heat, but the other colors that I have purchased and are not as often used are fine. I decided to look into the ingredients to see if there were some differences to explain how some colors (Honor & Believe) were giving me this issue, and indeed I found the formulations to differ.
Honor (almost identical to Believe):
Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil•, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax•, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter•, Cera Alba (Beeswax) •, Mica, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch•, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil•, Rosa Rubiginosa (Rose Hip) Seed Oil•, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Oil•, Gardenia Florida Fruit Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Ammonium Glycyrrhizate, Limonene*, Dextrin, Citral*, CI 75470 (Carmine), CI 77492 (Iron Oxide), CI 77891 (Titanium Dioxide), CI 77491 (Iron Oxide), CI 77499(Iron Oxide)
Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil*, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax*, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter*, Cera Alba (Beeswax) *, Mica, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Rosa Rubiginosa (Rose Hip) Seed Oil*, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Oil*, Gardenia Florida Fruit Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Ammonium Glycyrrhizate, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Glyceryl Stearate, Gallic Acid, Limonene+, Dextrin, Citral+, CI 15850 (Red 7 Lake), CI 77891 (Titanium Dioxide), CI 77491 (Iron Oxide)
I’m not sure if it really is the corn starch that’s to blame here, but that’s my best guess for now! Although I must add I love that my lips don’t feel dry after application thus in that aspect I like the formula, in all, I do think the formulations of all the colors have room for improvement to make them glide on more smoothly and easily. The formula is not as easy to work with since you have to warm the lipsticks up against your lips, then start lightly brushing your lips with them. You do have to be good about that method, since you may experience breaking as I did twice with Honor. Other than these details, there is no doubt these lipsticks are very well pigmented and have very good staying power. KW Red and Adore are gorgeous reds, and I like Affection for a simple, light pop of color. Honor is used very often, whereas Believe I use the least. Honor is semi-matte while Believe and Affection are matte. KW Red is more opaque.
If you are looking to purchase Honor or Believe, as much as I love their color and finish so much, I wouldn’t recommend it, especially considering its price. Unfortunately, I expect more from Kjaer Weis when it comes to the formulations of their lipstick releases, and look forward to future improvements. However, I do recommend the alternative of replacing Believe with 27 Kisses from Nudus Australia (coming up below), as they are similar in color and the formula is much better in the case of the latter. Due to expressed interest, I swatched Believe, 27 Kisses, and Undone below. As you can see, the first two are much more similar, with Undone tending more towards pink. On my lips especially, I will see the strong pink undertone of Undone which differentiates it from the other two mauve colors.
Kosas is in my opinion is the easiest to apply, probably the easiest of all the brands mentioned here (click here for more info). The formulation is very smooth, cushiony, weightless yet richly pigmented, and long-lasting. Definitely one of my favorite lip brands from Green Beauty.
When I bought undone, the casing was not yet magnetic, and the metal part on the inner bottom of the case actually came loose. With Fringe, these issues were ameliorated and I LOVE the magnetic casing since I keep my lipsticks in my purse and sometimes the caps will come undone (no pun intended 😉 ). I also love the sleek black look.
Undone is a tad too pink for my own liking, but I find when I mix it with the Bronce Eye Tint from Gressa, it makes for an amazing combination. For fun, I’ve included the swatches of Undone and Fringe mixed in with Bronce. They appear similar, but one has more of a deep pink and the other a deep dark red, respectively. Fringe is such a beautiful color, my favorite red thus far. Note the formulas do contain synthetic dyes.
In this picture, with the natural sunlight (compared to the lack of sunlight in the setting of the swatch above), you can observe the pink undertones of Undone better.
This is definitely another one of my top green lipstick brands (click here for more info). It’s creamy yet matte (Halo is more semi-matte), very nourishing, has great pigmentation, and the formulas give me no problems at all. In terms of the packaging, it’s a white case with a beautiful drawing of a woman inside when you open the cap- very lightweight overall (for Halo, the casing has actually cracked, my purse is a dangerous place to be). My pictures slightly show the image, so you’ll have to get one yourself to see the whole thing! 😉
I mean it’s hard to go wrong with this brand, just look at the description of the ingredients as stated on the Integrity Botanicals site:
” 27 active ingredients, including vitamins A, B, C, D, E and K and antioxidants such as pomegranate, raspberry and kiwi cold pressed oils protect against environmental stress. Shea butter and avocado, coconut and argan oils leave lips soft, hydrated and moisturized.”
So when I say these formulation aren’t drying, I mean it!
When I had dark hair, 27 Kisses and Dreamtime were my life. I notice they do not look as good on me with lighter hair, but with my roots growing back I can pull off these babies again. These are amazing colors people, you must try. Halo is a tad too light for me right now, I’m feeling more of the darker colors vibe.
RMS Beauty ($28)
This release was a pleasant surprise- I am really enjoying the lipstick from RMS (click here for more info). I have one color and yet, it’s impressed me. I thought the staying power would not be very long as some of the other products in the line are not for me, but I was proved otherwise. The lipstick is very pigmented, creamy, and matte (the most matte of all the mentioned brands here). I do actually, however, find the lipstick a little drying. Continuing onto their second release, their lipliner is one of my favorites; I found the Kjaer Weis Lip Liner a little too matte/drying (the cap also keeps coming off in my purse), and the Jane Iredale one is a little too smooth/not as strong in terms of staying power. I also love the application! Very thin point that does not need to sharpened, and you need only twist the top to get more product out. I like the sleek silver look of the lipstick case as well- it’s lightweight yet very sturdy, and survives in my purse.
In terms of ingredients, I take this directly from their site:
“If your goal is to avoid all synthetic pigments, please choose from other products in the rms beauty line. As science advances, we will continue to reformulate until we find a natural source for that color.”
The lipsticks do contain synthetic dyes, and if your concern is to avoid all synthetic colors, that statement may be of interest to you. Daytime Nude is a perfect color for my lips (it matches my natural color exactly), while Brain Teaser is a lovely medium pinky brown (as you can tell, I love my pinks mixed with browns).
Since it’s the holidays and you may be wanting to wear red lips, here are some red lippies from above swatched next to each other. 😉
